The Health Value of Nuts

Nuts provide protein, fiber and some vitamins and minerals in varying amounts.  The fat in nuts is mostly unsaturated and nuts contain no cholesterol.  Unless salted, nuts are low in sodium.  Even though nuts are "nutrient dense", which means they supply many nutrients along with calories -- they are not a low calorie food.

  • According to the  Study of Patients with Parkinson's Disease, "one of the foods associated with the absence of Parkinson's Disease is found to be nuts." The vitamin E content in nuts works as an antioxidant and may have prophylactic value against Parkinson's Disease.

  • In an Adventist health study, their results concluded that "...those that ate a handful of nuts five or more times a week lived two years longer!"  This same study suggests that you may be able to cut your risk of sudden cardiac death in half by eating nuts twice a week.

  • Researchers for the Harvard School of Public health have found that "...women who consume nuts or peanut butter five times per week or more, significantly lowered their risk for type 2 diabetes compared to those who are never or rarely ate nuts or peanut butter."
    JAMA Nov. 27, 2002; Vol. 288: 2554-60

  • In an article entitled Progression of Age-Related Macular Degeneration, a study found that "Nuts reduced the risk of progression to advanced AMD (neovascular disease) in individuals with early or intermediate stages."  Advanced AMD is associated with visual loss.
